7 Ways to know if you should re-upholster your furniture

By April 16, 2020 December 22nd, 2022 2 Comments

As an upholstery shop owner, I am always asked by potential clients if re-upholstering their furniture is worth it. My answer to them is always, “it depends on your furniture.” If you are wondering the same thing and want to know if reupholstering your furniture is right the right move. This article will help. I’ll tell you 7 key ways of knowing whether your furniture is worth reupholstering or not

  1. Is it antique?
Knowing rather your piece of furniture is antique or vintage is a major factor. Making the choice to re-upholster an antique is an easy call! Re-upholstering antique furniture is always worth it 10 times over. Keeping such a valuable piece of history alive in your home is what we upholsterers get excited about. As an upholsterer I always recommended keeping old straw and horsehair paddings, rather than replacing them with foam, which takes away from the authenticity of the piece. Re-upholstering gorgeous antique furniture can be priceless.
  2. What’s the Quality?
If your current piece has hardwood frame, coil springs, down or spring cushions, it most certainly is a high quality piece of furniture and is a good choice to re-upholster. Outdated details or blemishes can easily be changed or fixed. For example; if your sofa has an old-fashioned skirt, it can be eliminated to make the sofa have a more contemporary look. Strong solid wooden frames can be hard to come by in today’s cheap furniture culture. If your piece has a great foundation then it’s definitely worth re-upholstering.
  3. Cost?
Re-upholstery is always less expensive than buying a new high-quality piece of furniture. Of course, for the cost of re-upholstering, you can probably purchase a brand new, cheap, poorly made piece of furniture. But, really, why would you? Most of the time you end up spending more money on cheap furniture down the road.
  4. Is it a Standout piece?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                A re-upholstered retro piece or a one-of-kind showpiece that can’t be purchased anywhere else is always worth it. Having a statement piece of furniture in your home that you were able to design and customize for your space is a great way to start conversations with friends and family. Never underestimate the power of a one-of-kind furniture piece.
  5. Is it a Unique Design?
Having a chair or sofa with a unique design that you love is worth re-upholstering. Some styles make a comeback and having a unique re-upholstered piece is always nice.
  6. Going Green!
Re-upholstering your furniture is a great way to stay green and help reduce your carbon footprint. It’s a travesty that the world we live in today has become a throw-away society. Choosing to re-upholster your furniture rather than throwing it out can make a huge impact on our landfills. You wouldn’t believe the quality furniture we pick up on the side of the road getting ready for the garbage truck to arrive. If you’re on a budget buy a cheap sofa, and dump it when it gets worn. If you must purchase new, buy a quality piece of furniture that you will be able to have reupholstered in the furniture rather than throwing it away. Also if you have a creative side and have a passion for design, there’s no better way to express yourself then to recycle something old into new.
  7. Does it have sentimental value?
If the answer to this is yes, then I don’t have to tell you how valuable it is. If it means something to you then it’s worth re-upholstering. Maybe you’ve been given your Grandparents favorite reading chair. Perhaps you have had a sofa that has been in your family for generations and it has now been passed down to you. Or maybe you just have a strong bond with your favorite reclining chair. There are so many reasons not to part with old furniture, and keeping these precious pieces in your home. They add to your life’s story.

Conclusion

I hope these 7 tips help you identify rather or not re-upholstering your furniture is worth it. There are many reasons why you should choose to re-upholster your furniture then just these 7 reasons I listed above. But, if you are uncertain and need a little help deciding then these 7 tips will benefit you.
